MATPAC Wrestling
is, first and foremost, a competitive wrestling program that is celebrating 30 years of developing young men into champions on and off the mat. MATPAC is a proven “system” that focuses on  world-class technique for all ages, and teaches the value of having fun, hard work, never giving up, and “winning will take care of itself” philosophy.



 


 

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

MATPAC SPRING SESSION STARTS TUESDAY MARCH 9TH

MATPAC is now accepting registration forms for the spring session which starts Tuesday, March 9th and runs through Thursday, May 27th.  Practices for the youth program (12 & Under) will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evening 5:00-6:00 PM in the Windsor High School wrestling room, the youth program is limited to 30 wrestlers.  The High School/Middle School (13-18) program will also take place on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 PM and is also limited to 30 wrestlers.   If you have registered with MATPAC previously, you DO NOT have to complete the registration/medical waiver forms, however a current USA Wrestling card is needed to participate.  If this is your first time with MATPAC please visit the registration page to complete the forms.  All paperwork and tuition will be collected the first day of practice.  If you have further questions please contact Coach Trusty at 970.218.1056.

 

THREE MATPAC WRESTLER'S WIN TITLES AT WHO'S BAD? NATIONAL CLASSIC

Corte Tapia, Payton Tapia and Robert Cotner won individual titles at the annual Who's Bad? National Classic which took place January 2, 2010 at the Budweiser Event Center.  Cort Tapia placed 1st in the 10 and under 127 weight division, older brother Payton won his title wrestling in the 15 and under 200 pound weight division, while Robert Cotner wrestled his way through the 15 and under 250 pound division.  Dylan Steffens made his way to the finals in the 18 and under 130 pound weight division, placing 2nd.  Cory Harris placed 5th in the 15 and under 144 pound classification, Seth Villa also earned a 5th place medal competing in the 18 and under 125 division and Austin Harris placed 4th at 135 pounds in the 18 and under.  Alex Weis and Benito Guiterrez also competed in the event.  Congratulations to these 9 fine young men on their performances.  Keep up the hard work...GO MATPAC!

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL WINTER-BREAK INTENSIVE TRAINING CAMP WITH TYLER GRAFF

4X Colorado State Champion and current University of Wisconsin stand-out Tyler Graff will be conducting MATPAC's winter-break intensive training camp Wednesday December, 23rd and Thursday December, 24th 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. The two day camp cost $25 and is only open to current registered MATPAC wrestler's ages 13-18.  Limited space is available please email matpacwrestling@gmail.com to reserve your spot today.  MATPAC will also be holding practices December 28th through December 31st and January 3rd & 4th, 7-9 AM.  These work-outs are only open to current MATPAC members with a current USA Wrestling membership.

 

THREE MATPAC WRESTLERS PLACE AT PRESEASON NATIONALS

Cedar Falls, Iowa- The competition was outstanding, as almost 900 wrestlers from across the nation competed at the UNI Dome at the University of Northern Iowa for the USA Wrestling PreSeason Folkstyle Nationals(Middle School & High School). 

Nine MATPAC wrestlers traded in their halloween costumes for singlets while wrestling late into Saturday night.  Nathaniel Garcia placed 4th in the 152 pound bracket going 5-2, Kurtis Ramsay made his way to the podium in the 152 pound bracket wrestling to a 5-2 record and Jordan Henrickson also placed 7th in the HS 130 class winning 8 out of 10 matches!  Greg Medina fell 1 match shy of placing, wrestling to a 2-2 record at 112 pounds in the Middle School competition.  Medina's two losses came to the eventual champion and 3rd place wrestlers.  Mark Edmonds, Dylan Steffens, Josh and Seth Donkle and John MacQueen also competed in the event with great heart and fire.

A few interesting notes from the tournament.  Jordan Henrickson was defeated by Taylor Wickett (Iowa) in the second round and then reeled off 7 consecutive vicories before falling to Daniel Neff (Pennsylvania) in the consolation quarter finals.  Nathaniel Garcia pulled off an incredible come from behind 6-4 OT victory over Jacob Tonte (Indiana) in the quarter finals in which his neck was injured and then refused not wrestle in the semi finals against one of the nations elite wrestler, Ravaugh Perkins (Nebraska).  Garcia fell to Perkins 11-4 in the semi finals, being the only wrestler Perkins did not pin or technical fall en route to his title.  Garcia then advanced to the 3rd and 4th place match, being held out due to the severity of his injury, placing 4th.  Kurtis Ramsay joined Garcia on the podium in the 152 pound weight division which fielded more than 70 wrestlers, giving MATPAC two of the eight national place winners!

Congratulations to all the wrestlers on a great performance and a special thanks to all the coaches, parents and families that made the trip, we could not do it without your help.  It was a great weekend of wrestling!

 


 

 

MARK EDMONDS PLACES 5TH AT FALL BRAWL

Congratulations to Mark Edmonds on his 5th place finish at the Blue Chip Fall Brawl that took place in Kansas City, Missouri.  Mark competed in the 112 pound High School division that fielded 32 wrestlers from around the country.  Mark wrestled to a 4-2 record with a fall over Zach Schall of Missouri for 5th place.  Great job on representing MATPAC Wrestling, the State of Colorado and Holyoke High School, we are all proud of your effort.

 

 

 

GAVALDON AND MEDBERY EARN ALL AMERICAN HONORS

Four MATPAC wrestlers competed in the Asic/Vaughan Junior & Cadet National Championships held in Fargo, North Dakota July 17-25.  Kegan Gavaldon placed 6th in the Freestyle 98 pound Cadet division and Connor Medbery finished 3rd, winning 9 of 10 matches with a fall over Aaron Pavlenko (Arizona) in the bronze medal match in the 215 pound Junior Greco Roman competition.

By placing in the top eight of the National tournament both Gavaldon and Medbery earned All American honors.  Austin Harris and Nathaniel Garcia also competed in the event, Harris broke his thumb 1st round of the Cadet Greco competition having to injury default out of the tournament while Garcia wrestled to a 4-2 record in arguably the tournaments toughest weight.

These four young men should be very proud of their accomplishments, they represented the State of Colorado, their respective High Schools and MATPAC wrestling very well.  Congratulations!!

 

SOUTHERN PLAINS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Four MATPAC wrestlers competed at the Southern Plains Freestyle & Greco Roman Regional Championships held in Fort Hays, Kansas, June 11-13th. This year's event attracted athletes from 16 states!  In the Freestyle tournament, Connor Medbery was crowned champion in the Junior 215 pound class, defeating Shea Nolan of New Mexico in the finals.  Austin Harris battled his way to the championship match of the Cadet 140 pound division before losing to Zeb Wahle of Iowa, earning a silver medal.  Dylan Steffens and Lance Jeffries also competed, just missing the medal matches.

In Greco Roman competition,  Austin Harris lead the way with a second place finish in the Cadet 140 pound bracket, while Connor Medbery and Lance Jeffries both finished third in their respective weight divisions.  Dylan Steffens missed the medal matches by one match.

Congratulations to these four wrestlers for their performance and willingness to seek the highest level competition!  Next stop... USA Wrestling Cadet/Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

 

  
 

COLORADO STATE FREESTYLE & GRECO ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team MATPAC placed first at the Colorado State Freestyle Championships with 154 classification points over runner-up, Colorado Elite 123 points.  Jordan Henrickson, Nathaniel Garcia, Emilio Martinez, and Connor Medbery won State titles in their respective weight classifications!  Roman Pacheco, Nolan Moore, Vincent Gonzales, Kegan Gavaldon, Wyatt Falasco, Dylan Steffens, Austin Harris, and Brett Ross all earned runner-up honors.  Jake Trusty, Angel Munnelly, William Henrickson, and Jack Kuck placed 3rd, while Lance Jeffries earned a fourth place medal in the brutal 152 pound Junior division that feilded multiple State high school champions and USA Wrestling All Americans!

Top ten Freestyle team standings:  1. MATPAC-154  2. Colorado Elite-123  3. Parker Sons of Thunder-102  4. Pine Creek Eagles-89  5. Cool Sunshine-79  6. Adams City-73  7. Westside-61  8. Team Jimmy-59  9. Widefield-50  10. Outlaws-49 

In Greco Roman Competition Team MATPAC placed second with 90 points behind Champion Colorado Elite 102 points.

Greco Roman State Champions were; Nolan Moore, Kegan Gavaldon, Jordan Henrickson, Nathaniel Garcia, and Connor Medbery.  William Henrickson, Dylan Steffens, Emilio Martinez and Austin Harris came up one match shy of a State title earning runner-up honors.  Vincent Gonzales, Frank Witt, Brett Ross and Jack Kuck place 3rd while Lance Jeffries finished the tournament with a fourth place finish.

Top ten Greco Roman team standings:  1. Colorado Elite-102  2. MATPAC-90  3. Pine Creek Eagles-59  4. Westside-51  5. Team Jimmy-38  6. Athletes in Action-36  7. Thunder-28  8. Parker Sons of Thunder-26  8. Widefield-26  9. Denver All Stars-25  10. Steel City-24  10. Fowler-24.

Gage Trusty, Skyler Score, Trent Ukasick and Kurtis Ramsay also competed in the event falling short of the medal rounds.

Team MATPAC wreslted to 30 medals and 9 State titles!  Great job to all the wrestlers, families, and coaches on a great weekend of wrestling!

NATHANIEL GARCIA WINS NORTHERN PLAINS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waterloo, Iowa- The Northern Plains Junior Regional Championships concluded Saturday evening at Young Arena as Nathaniel Garcia won the 145 pound Freestyle title defeating Parker Madl (Kansas) in the championship match.  Garcia completed the Freestyle competition with a 6-0 record.

In Greco Roman competition, Garcia place 3rd with a hard faught victory over Taylor Menke (Minnesota) in the bronze medal match at 145 pounds.  Kegan Gavaldon earned a silver medal losing to Jacob Bergeron (Minnesota) in the 98 pound championship match.

Other MATPAC wrestlers participating in the Freestyle tournament were; 98 Kegan Gavaldon, 130 Josh Donkle, 135 Austin Harris, 152 Kurtis Ramsay and 285 Jack Kuck.  Ramsay came one match away from making the round robin losing to eventual champion Branden Wienke (Wisconsin) finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Congratulations to these six fine young men for their hard work, dedication and desire to seek the highest level of competition that the country has to offer.  We are very proud of your efforts!  

On a side note, Nathaniel Garcia earned his first PAC FORCE honor with his USA Wrestling Regional Championship...Congratulations!
 

 

SIX PLACE AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONALS

Payton Tapia and Lance Jeffries were crowned champions at the Rocky Mountain Nationals held in Denver, Colorado, March 20, 21 and 22nd.  This three-day event attracted 3000 of the toughest wrestlers from around the country.  Tapia won his individual title competing in the 12 & under 186 pound weight division, while Jeffries championship was at the 145 pound high school division.

Greg Medina, 12 & under 106 pounds and teammate Jack Kuck, 15 & under Heavyweight both battled their way to runner-up honors.  Medina finished the tournament with an impressive 5-1 record in a very tough 32-man bracket.

Corte Tapia earned a third place finish in the 10 & under 120 weight division, while fellow MATPAC wrestler, Joey Pattison competed in one of the tournaments deepest weights, finishing 6th in the 64-man field wrestling to a 6-3 record.

Congratulations to all wrestlers that represented MATPAC at this awesome event!
